Just quickly posting a link to this article as a reminder for when i finally get back working on this site.
It provides a few simple and interesting ways of implementing captchas that won't drive the users crazy with annoying/unreadable tests. I'll definitely implement one of those on here someday (i'm sure there's some django package somewhere that could deal with it already, but these methods are pretty cool, seem easy enough and make for a nice quick exercise. also, reinventing the wheel might be a waste of time, but hey, it's fun!).
Also, here's a quicklist of other planned updates for the site:
- Set up a git repository on the server, or more generally, define some clean and sane deployment strategy. I initially deployed this site by copying everything on the server via FTP and tweaking the configuration on there, but i know realize that i'll soon go crazy if i attempt to further update it this way.
- Fix the css. The basic template works well enough but it tends to break inside actual posts (this very list should demonstrate this pretty well). As much as i hate css, something needs to be done soon.
- Install a TinyMCE editor on the server so that i can stop having to edit my posts 7 times after publication because of silly html mistakes
- Last but not least, ADD SOME ACTUAL STUFF. Even if it's only something trivial like the contact page, it'll help turn this site into more than a toy (i might play with some fancy jQueryUI stuff for it, just to show off a bit). I'm also starting to have some vague ideas about stuff i could put on the project page, so i should start thinking about what i'll do with it. Finally, while the blog app works well enough for now, a few tweaks to it could still be fun.
I obviously have no idea of when i'll actually get started on all of this, but hey, at least having some kind of plan is better than nothing.
